Husainid dynasty
The Husainid dynasty ruled Tunisia as beys from 1705, when the cavalry officer Husayn ibn Ali seized power during an invasion from Algiers, until 1957. Nominally under Ottoman sovereignty, the beys governed largely independently and in the 19th century attempted modernising reforms. From 1881 they reigned under a French protectorate, and the monarchy was abolished a year after independence.
