Ahmad I Bey

1806–1855 · 19th century · Also known as Ahmad Bey of Tunis

Ahmad I Bey was the Husainid bey of Tunis from 1837 to 1855. He modernised the army on European lines, founded a military school at Bardo and built factories, and abolished slavery in Tunisia in 1846, before France or the United States. The cost of his reforms burdened the treasury and contributed to the beylik's later debts.
