Ahmad Fanakati

d. 1282 · 13th century

Ahmad Fanakati was a Central Asian Muslim from Banakat who served as chief finance minister of the Yuan dynasty under Kublai Khan for some twenty years. He raised revenue through monopolies and higher taxes and placed his relatives in office, which made him widely hated among Chinese officials. He was assassinated in Dadu in 1282, after which Kublai condemned him posthumously.
