Hammuda ibn Ali

r. 1782–1814 · 18th century

Hammuda ibn Ali, also called Hammuda Pasha, was the Husainid bey of Tunis from 1782 to 1814. His reign is regarded as the high point of the dynasty: Tunis grew prosperous from trade and corsair activity, he repelled a Venetian naval campaign, and in 1807 he defeated the Regency of Algiers, ending the tribute Tunis had paid it. He also strengthened the army and fortifications.
