Treaty of Mellifont
The Treaty of Mellifont was the submission of Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, to Lord Mountjoy at Mellifont in County Louth in March 1603, ending the Nine Years' War. O'Neill renounced his Gaelic title and accepted English law but kept most of his lands; he had not been told that Elizabeth I had died days earlier. Growing pressure on his position led to the Flight of the Earls in 1607.
