Treaty of Nymphaeum (1261)

1261 · 13th century

The Treaty of Nymphaeum was concluded in March 1261 between the Nicaean emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos and the Republic of Genoa. Genoa promised naval help against the Latin Empire of Constantinople and Venice, and in return received tax-free trade, quarters in Byzantine cities and access to the Black Sea. Although Constantinople was retaken without Genoese help, the treaty laid the basis for Genoa's Black Sea colonies.
