Treaty of Pilar

1820 · 19th century · Part of the Argentine Civil Wars

The Treaty of Pilar was signed on 23 February 1820 by the governor of Buenos Aires, Manuel de Sarratea, and the federalist caudillos Francisco Ramírez of Entre Ríos and Estanislao López of Santa Fe, after their victory at Cepeda. It ended the central Directorate, accepted a federal organisation for the provinces of the Río de la Plata and declared free navigation of the rivers. By ignoring José Artigas, it broke up the Federal League.
