Tribal Hidage
The Tribal Hidage is an Anglo-Saxon list of 35 peoples south of the Humber, giving the number of hides, units of land assessment, attributed to each. It probably records tribute owed to a Mercian or possibly Northumbrian overlord and is usually dated between the 7th and 9th centuries; the oldest copy is an 11th-century manuscript. Many of the small groups it names, such as the Elmetsæte, are otherwise almost unknown.
