Udayin

5th century BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Udayabhadra

Udayin, or Udayabhadra, was a king of Magadha of the Haryanka dynasty, the son and successor of Ajatashatru. Buddhist and Jain tradition credits him with founding Pataliputra, modern Patna, on the Ganges, which became Magadha's capital and later the capital of the Maurya Empire. His exact dates are uncertain, and Jain sources say he was murdered.
