Mahapadma Nanda

4th century BCE · 4th century BCE

Mahapadma Nanda was the founder of the Nanda dynasty of Magadha, who around 345 BCE overthrew the last Shishunaga king. Tradition describes him as a man of low birth, and the Puranas call him a destroyer of the old Kshatriya dynasties. Ruling from Pataliputra, he extended Magadhan power over most of the Ganges valley, creating the first large empire of northern India.
