Shishunaga

5th–4th century BCE · 4th century BCE

Shishunaga was a king of Magadha in eastern India and founder of the Shishunaga dynasty, which replaced the line of Bimbisara around the late 5th or early 4th century BCE. Buddhist sources say he was a minister raised to the throne by the people. He conquered the rival kingdom of Avanti, centred on Ujjain, ending its independence and leaving Magadha the dominant power of the Ganges plain.
