Union of the Crowns

1603 · 17th century

The Union of the Crowns was the accession of James VI of Scotland to the thrones of England and Ireland on the death of Elizabeth I in March 1603. The kingdoms kept their own parliaments, laws and churches but shared one monarch, who now lived in London and governed Scotland through the Privy Council in Edinburgh. The personal union lasted until the Acts of Union of 1707.
