The University of Vienna was founded in 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV of Austria and is the oldest university in today's German-speaking world. A papal bull approved most faculties at the start, and a faculty of theology was added in 1384. It became one of the largest universities in Europe and a centre of medicine, philosophy and science.
