Upemba Depression
The Upemba Depression is a low-lying basin of lakes, marshes and fertile land along the upper Lualaba River in the south-east of the present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo. Archaeological sites there show long continuous occupation. Accounts of the Luba Empire identify it as the heartland in which the empire emerged, its soils sustaining dense populations and its trade linking it to the Copperbelt.
