Val di Chiana
The Val di Chiana is a broad valley in eastern Tuscany and western Umbria, running from near Arezzo south to Chiusi and Lake Trasimeno. In Etruscan times its fertile soils supported Clusium, Cortona and Arretium and linked central Etruria with the Tiber and Arno valleys. It later turned to marsh and was drained by the grand dukes of Tuscany between the 16th and 19th centuries.
