Vilshofen an der Donau

Also known as Vilshofen

Vilshofen an der Donau is a town in the Passau district of Lower Bavaria, where the Vils joins the Danube about 20 km upstream from Passau. Granted town rights in the early 13th century, it passed to the Wittelsbach dukes of Bavaria and lived from river trade. The castle of Ortenburg, seat of the counts of Ortenburg, lies in the hills to the south.
