House of Sponheim
The House of Sponheim, also spelt Spanheim, was a medieval German noble family whose origins lay in the Rhineland. One branch moved to Carinthia, where it ruled as dukes from 1122 to 1269, while related lines held the Rhenish county of Sponheim and the Bavarian county of Ortenburg. The Ortenburg counts kept their small imperial county until 1805.
