Duke's Chair

9th century · 9th century · Also known as Herzogstuhl

The Duke's Chair is a double stone throne on the Zollfeld plain north of Klagenfurt in Carinthia, Austria, probably assembled in the 9th century from reused Roman stones. After their installation at the Prince's Stone, new dukes of Carinthia sat on it to receive homage and grant fiefs. The ceremonies lapsed in early modern times, and the chair is now a symbol of the province.
