Vĩnh Tế Canal

1819–1824 · 19th century · Also known as Vinh Te Canal

The Vĩnh Tế Canal is a canal of about 90 kilometres in the Mekong delta, running along the Cambodian border from Châu Đốc to Hà Tiên on the Gulf of Thailand. Dug between 1819 and 1824 under Gia Long and Minh Mạng by tens of thousands of Vietnamese and Khmer labourers, it served defence, transport and irrigation, and it still marks much of the border.
