Vishayapati
A vishayapati was the official in charge of a vishaya, or district, in the Gupta Empire. Vishayapatis were often drawn from local merchant guilds, working beneath the provincial governors known as uparikas. The office illustrates the Gupta reliance on local elites within a layered provincial administration.
