Vitória, Espírito Santo

Vitória is the capital of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo, built mainly on an island in a bay on the Atlantic coast. It was founded in 1551, when settlers moved there from Vila Velha for safety from indigenous attacks, and became the captaincy's capital. Today it is a major port, especially for the export of iron ore.
