Vítkovice ironworks

1828 · 19th century

The Vítkovice ironworks in Ostrava were founded in 1828 by Archduke Rudolf, archbishop of Olomouc, and were later owned by the Rothschild family. Using coal from the Ostrava basin, they became one of the largest iron and steel works in the Habsburg Monarchy and the core of Ostrava's industrial growth. Nationalised after 1945, they remained a major Czechoslovak steel and engineering concern.
