Waldemar, Margrave of Brandenburg

c. 1280–1319 · 14th century · Also known as Waldemar the Great

Waldemar the Great was Margrave of Brandenburg from 1308 to 1319, the last important ruler of the Ascanian line. He brought the whole Mark under his rule and defended it against a coalition of Denmark, Mecklenburg and other northern neighbours. His early death, followed in 1320 by that of the young Henry II, ended Ascanian rule and left Brandenburg leaderless.
