Walcheren
Walcheren is a former island in the Dutch province of Zeeland, at the mouth of the Scheldt, now joined to the mainland by reclaimed land. Its port of Vlissingen (Flushing) commanded the approach to Antwerp. In 1809 a British expedition of about 40,000 men landed there to strike at the French fleet, but it was crippled by 'Walcheren fever' and withdrew. Allied forces flooded and captured the island in 1944.
