Walter Nash

1882–1968 · 20th century · Also known as Sir Walter Nash

Walter Nash was a British-born New Zealand politician who was Prime Minister from 1957 to 1960, leading the Second Labour Government. As finance minister from 1935 to 1949 he had helped build the welfare state of the First Labour Government. His own government's 1958 Black Budget, which raised taxes on beer, cigarettes and cars to meet a balance-of-payments crisis, contributed to its defeat in 1960.
