Walter Reed

1851–1902 · 19th century

Walter Reed was a United States Army physician who in 1900 led the commission in Cuba that proved Carlos Finlay's theory that yellow fever is spread by mosquitoes. Experiments with human volunteers at Camp Lazear near Havana established the mode of transmission, allowing the disease to be controlled by mosquito eradication. The Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington was named after him.
