Wamsutta

d. 1662 · 17th century

Wamsutta, called Alexander by the English, was the eldest son of Massasoit and became sachem of the Wampanoag after his father's death around 1661. In 1662 Plymouth Colony, suspicious of his land sales and dealings, had him brought in under armed escort for questioning, and he fell ill and died soon afterwards. His death embittered his younger brother Metacom, who succeeded him.
