1604–1690 · 17th century

John Eliot (1604–1690) was an English Puritan minister in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, known as the "Apostle to the Indians". He learned the Massachusett language, preached to Native communities from 1646 and organised settlements of Christian Native people known as praying towns, beginning with Natick in 1651. His translation of the Bible into Massachusett, printed at Cambridge in 1663, was the first complete Bible printed in North America.
