Washington Agreement (1946)

1946 · 20th century

The Washington Agreement of May 1946 settled Allied claims against Switzerland arising from its wartime dealings with Nazi Germany. Switzerland agreed to pay 250 million francs in return for the Allies giving up claims to gold acquired by the Swiss National Bank, and to liquidate German assets in Switzerland, sharing the proceeds. The Allies in turn lifted their blacklists of Swiss firms.
