Washington Luís

1869–1957 · 20th century · Also known as Washington Luís Pereira de Sousa

Washington Luís was a Brazilian politician from São Paulo who served as president of Brazil from 1926 to 1930, the last president of the First Brazilian Republic. Known for his road-building, he broke the alternation of power between São Paulo and Minas Gerais by backing the paulista Júlio Prestes as his successor. The Revolution of 1930 led by Getúlio Vargas deposed him weeks before the end of his term, and he went into exile.
