Willem Adriaan van der Stel
Willem Adriaan van der Stel succeeded his father Simon van der Stel as governor of the Dutch Cape Colony, serving from 1699 to 1707. He and other officials used their positions to build up large private farms, notably his estate of Vergelegen, and to dominate the colony's markets. Free burgher settlers protested to the Dutch East India Company, which dismissed him in 1707.
