William I of Angoulême

d. 962 · 10th century · Also known as William I Taillefer

William I of Angoulême, called Taillefer, was a 10th-century count of Angoulême in western France. Tradition gives him his nickname, 'iron-cutter', from a blow that split a Viking's armour. His descendants, the Taillefer line, held the county for more than three centuries as vassals of the dukes of Aquitaine.
