House of Valois-Angoulême

1515–1589 · 16th century

The House of Valois-Angoulême was a branch of the French royal Valois dynasty, descended from John, Count of Angoulême, a younger son of Louis I, Duke of Orléans. Its head, Francis I, succeeded his cousin Louis XII as king of France in 1515, and the line ruled France through the Italian Wars and the Wars of Religion until the death of Henry III in 1589, when the crown passed to the Bourbons.
