The Varano were a noble family who ruled Camerino in the Marche from the second half of the 13th century until 1539. Gentile da Varano led the city from 1262, and his descendants served as papal vicars and condottieri. Cesare Borgia had Giulio Cesare da Varano and his sons killed in 1502, but the family returned, became dukes in 1515 and lost Camerino to Pope Paul III.
