William McDougall

1822–1905 · 19th century

William McDougall was a Canadian politician and Father of Confederation who, as a federal minister, negotiated the transfer of Rupert's Land to Canada. Appointed lieutenant governor of the North-West Territories in 1869, he was turned back by armed Métis at the border of the Red River settlement and never took office. His premature proclamation of Canadian authority damaged his career.
