Ottawa is the capital of Canada, on the Ottawa river in eastern Ontario. Founded as Bytown in 1826 during the building of the Rideau Canal, it was renamed in 1855 and chosen by Queen Victoria in 1857 as capital of the Province of Canada, a choice confirmed at Confederation in 1867. The name is often used for the Canadian federal government itself.
