Ottavio Farnese

1524–1586 · 16th century

Ottavio Farnese was duke of Parma and Piacenza from 1547, a grandson of Pope Paul III. After his father Pier Luigi was murdered, he held on to Parma against imperial pressure, fighting the War of Parma with French support in 1551–1552. Through his marriage to Margaret of Parma, daughter of Charles V, he was reconciled with the Habsburgs, and Philip II returned Piacenza to him in 1556.
