1870 · 19th century · Also known as Wolseley Expedition

The Red River Expedition of 1870 was a military force of British regulars and Canadian militia led by Colonel Garnet Wolseley to assert Canadian authority at Red River, in present-day Manitoba, after the resistance led by Louis Riel. The troops travelled from Ontario by lake, river and portage and reached Fort Garry in August 1870, finding that Riel had fled.
