Wissembourg Abbey

7th century · 7th century · Also known as Weissenburg Abbey

Wissembourg Abbey was a Benedictine monastery in northern Alsace on the river Lauter, founded in the 7th century and dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Richly endowed by Frankish kings, it was a centre of learning where the monk Otfrid wrote his Old High German Gospel Harmony in the 9th century. The town of Wissembourg grew around it, and its Gothic church survives.
