Lauter (Rhine)
The Lauter is a river that rises in the Palatinate Forest in Germany and flows south-east past Wissembourg to join the Rhine near Lauterbourg. For much of its lower course it forms the border between France and Germany. The Lauter Lines, a chain of French defensive earthworks, were built along it in the early 18th century.
