Woyzeck

1836–1837 · 19th century

Woyzeck is an unfinished play by Georg Büchner, written in 1836-1837 and left in fragments at his death. It tells of a poor soldier, exploited and humiliated, who murders the woman he loves. Published in 1879 and first staged in 1913, it is regarded as a forerunner of modern drama and inspired Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck.
