Darmstadt Artists' Colony

1899–1914 · 19th century

The Darmstadt Artists' Colony was founded in 1899 by Grand Duke Ernest Louis of Hesse on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt to promote modern art and design. Its exhibition of 1901, with houses and studios by Joseph Maria Olbrich and Peter Behrens, was a landmark of Jugendstil, and Olbrich's Wedding Tower of 1908 became its emblem. The colony lasted until 1914.
