Xi Gui

7th century BCE · 7th century BCE · Also known as Lady Xi

Xi Gui was the wife of the Marquis of Xi, a small Zhou state, whose story is told in the Zuo zhuan. An insult to her by the Marquis of Cai drew Chu into the region; King Wen of Chu destroyed Xi around 680 BCE and took her as his wife, and by tradition she bore him the future King Cheng but refused to speak to him.
