Ximen Bao

5th century BCE · 5th century BCE

Ximen Bao was an official of the State of Wei in the 5th century BCE, governor of Ye under Marquis Wen. He is remembered for ending the local custom of 'marrying' girls to the river god by having the shamans thrown into the river instead, and for digging twelve canals that irrigated the district. The story made him a model of the rational official.
