Xie Xuan

343–388 · 4th century

Xie Xuan was a Chinese general of the Eastern Jin dynasty and nephew of the statesman Xie An. In 377 he raised the Beifu, or 'Northern Headquarters', army at Jingkou from refugees from the north, which became the dynasty's best fighting force. He led the vanguard that routed the much larger Former Qin army at the Battle of Fei River in 383 and then recovered territory south of the Yellow River.
