Yaska

c. 5th century BCE · 5th century BCE

Yaska was an ancient Indian grammarian and author of the Nirukta, the oldest surviving treatise on Sanskrit etymology and the interpretation of Vedic words. Usually dated to around the 5th century BCE, before Panini, he discussed how words derive from verbal roots. In passing he notes that the Kambojas used a distinct word for going, often taken as evidence of their Iranian speech.
