Yên Thế Insurrection

1884–1913 · 19th century · Also known as Yen The Insurrection

The Yên Thế Insurrection was a long rural resistance to French rule in the hill district of Yên Thế, north of Hanoi, which lasted from 1884 to 1913. Led for most of that time by Hoàng Hoa Thám, known as De Tham, the insurgents fought French columns and negotiated several truces before the movement ended with his death in 1913.
