Young Italy

1831–1853 · 19th century · Also known as La Giovine Italia, Giovine Italia

Young Italy (La Giovine Italia) was an Italian political movement founded by Giuseppe Mazzini in Marseille in July 1831, while he was in exile. It aimed to create a united Italian republic through a general insurrection in the Italian reactionary states and the lands occupied by the Austrian Empire, and had about 60,000 members around 1833. Its revolts in Savoy and Piedmont in 1833 and 1834 and later risings in Sicily, Tuscany and Bologna failed, and many members were arrested and executed. Giuseppe Garibaldi joined it around 1833; it was affiliated with Mazzini's Giovine Europa, and was effectively ended after a last failed revolt against Austria in Milan in 1853.
