Zahir al-Umar
Zahir al-Umar was an Arab sheikh of the Zaydani clan who built an autonomous domain in Galilee in the 18th century, taking Tiberias and making Acre his capital and a busy cotton-exporting port. He defied the Ottoman governors of Damascus and allied with Ali Bey of Egypt and the Russian navy. He was killed in 1775 when an Ottoman fleet besieged Acre.
