Zainal Abidin Syah

1912–1967 · 20th century

Zainal Abidin Syah was sultan of Tidore in the Moluccas from 1947 until his death in 1967. After Indonesian independence he backed Indonesia's claim to Dutch-held West New Guinea, which Tidore had historically claimed as a dependency, and in 1956 he became the first governor of the Indonesian province of West Irian, with its seat at Soasio on Tidore. The sultanate then lapsed until its revival in 1999.
